Artichokes Green Globe General Description
The Green Globe artichoke is a perennial heirloom variety known for its silvery-green leaves and hardiness in USDA zones 8 to 11. It grows to a height of 4 feet and produces three to four buds, each 2 to 5 inches in diameter. If left to mature, the buds develop into attractive purple thistle-like flowers. This variety is a heavy feeder and requires a 120-day growing season, making it suitable for indoor starting between late January and early March. Artichokes thrive in full sun and prefer a mild, damp maritime climate, such as coastal California. They are drought-tolerant but yield better with evenly moist soil, especially when buds are developing.
