Ostrich Fern is a large, deciduous fern with feathery, plume-like fronds that grow in clumps from a single rhizome, thriving in moist, shaded environments.
Appearance and Growth
Ostrich Fern is a clump-forming, upright to arching fern that typically grows 2–6 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, depending on conditions. Its sterile fronds are finely dissected, bright green, and resemble ostrich plumes, forming a vase-like crown around the shorter, fertile fronds, which are erect, spike-like, and dark brown, persisting through winter. In spring, the fern produces fiddleheads, which unfurl into the full fronds and are edible if harvested sustainably.
