Cyperus is a large genus of about 700 species of sedges, primarily found in tropical and temperate regions. These plants are typically aquatic or growing in still or slow-moving water, with heights ranging from small species only 5 cm to larger ones reaching up to 5 meters. The stems are usually circular or triangular in cross-section, and the leaves are slender and grass-like at the base. Cyperus species produce greenish flowers that are wind-pollinated and are often found in clusters among the leaves. The seeds are small and nutty, and the plants are known to provide food for various small birds and mammals, as well as for some larvae of Lepidoptera species.
