Pinus mugo ‘Carstens’ is a slow-growing, dwarf evergreen mugo pine prized for its brilliant golden-yellow foliage in winter, making it one of the best “winter gold” conifers. It was discovered by Erwin Carstens in Varel, Germany, before 1988 and named in his honor. In 2012, it won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding winter color and hardiness.
