Vinca major, commonly known as greater periwinkle, is an evergreen, mat-forming perennial with long prostrate rooting stems covered with glossy ovate leaves. It features large violet-blue flowers that bloom in mid-spring and continue to flower intermittently throughout summer into fall. This plant is excellent for suppressing weeds and is a vigorous groundcover suitable for large expanses of ground. It can also be used in hanging baskets and containers, where its lustrous foliage dangles on stringy stems. Vinca major thrives in full sun to part shade, tolerates close to full shade, and grows best in rich, moist soils.
